Throwdown Press

Jason Phu and I recently started a project called Throwdown Press.  Throwdown Press is a “not-for-profit custom printing model that has an emphasis on open dialogue, broad relationships with the artistic community, informal teaching processes and support for emerging artists.”  What this means, is that we invite emerging artists with no printmaking background, to come and make prints with us.

Our first group (Ramesh Nhithyendran, Al Poulet and Patrick Cremin) have almost finished their residency and the results are encouraging.  We’ll be posting images, interviews and general stuff at http://throwdownpress.wordpress.com .  Be sure to check it out!

In culture as in culture

Here is a frame grab from a new piece I'm working on.  It's a video of a video projection on to a Jewish yahrzeit ('soul' remembrance) candle.

Matthew Calandra hard-ground drawing

Matthew Calandra has been drawing up portraits for the last few months as part of a Cicada Press residency he was invited to be part of.  The resulting body of works include portraits of artists such as Ian Grant, Vernon Ah-Kee, Michael Kempson, Elisabeth Cummings and many more.  These prints will be shown at Gaffa Gallery in the next few months (more details to come).

Here is a little video that was shot from Matthew's perspective while he was drawing up a portrait of Rafael Butron.  The camera was mounted to Matt's head, so it's a bit shaky at times.

Matthew was joking around and finished the portrait of Rafael as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle!

After having a laugh, he did another portrait which ended up looking like this:

Iain Dawson

A video interview of Iain Dawson in his Sydney gallery.  My show was on at the time, so you can catch a glimpse.

(Un)seen Sculptures 2012

I've had a work accepted in to an augmented reality exhibition call (Un)seen Scultpures which is happening as part of Sydney Art Month 2012.

Augmented reality means that I (with much help from the curator Warren Armstrong) created a 3D digital model which was then virtually placed in a physical location.  At the location you can only see the work if you view it through a smart phone or tablet.  The website describes it :

Situated in these locations will be virtual digital works; hidden from the naked eye but visible to anyone with an iPhone, Android or Nokia smartphone and an app called theLayar Reality Browser, that can be downloaded for free from iTunes, the Android Market or the Ovi Store.
Once they have downloaded this app, people can simply open it up, search for “unseen”, select the layer set up for the show, then hold up their phones at the designated locations, and they will see 3D artworks. When these artworks are “touched”, further information about them will be revealed and other forms of interaction may be unlocked.

The exhibition is on until March 31st in the Rozelle area,  and there will be tours on Sat the 17th, 24th and 31st of March.

You'll find the work in Rozelle (Sydney) at the following location (google maps) :

Lens Mist photo competition

I've been shortlisted for the annual Lens Mist photo competition (for photos of seascapes).  Now all I have to do is wait with my fingers crossed...

Mind & Reality exhibition - CofaSpace Sydney

Last night was the opening of the Mind & Reality exhibition at CofaSpace Gallery in Sydney.  Mind & Reality is a print portfolio organized by Kathryn Drury and myself.  We chose 32 artists from Sydney and Chicago and asked each artist to create print based on the theme of mind and reality.  The resulting portfolio was exhibited at Roxaboxen Projects in Chicago and at CofaSpace Gallery in Sydney.

Just started a new project

I just started working on the screen-printed elements of my new project 'Performance Anxiety' and thought it would be fun to shoot a short video of the process.

I was wearing the camera on my head, so please excuse the 'jumpy' look...

Finally my billboard is installed.  More images to come...

Molle Street Billboard commission

The Molle Street Billboard Project based in Hobart has commissioned me to do a work for their billboard.  I'm not sure when it's going up (sometime in Feb) but here are some images of the work in progress in the studio.

I've wanted to do a billboard for a long time, so when this opportunity came up, I jumped at it.  Billboards are perfect for my work since they are part of the language of consumer culture.  An integral aspect of my practice.

I'll post some images when the billboard is up.

skilled and de-skilled

'the Conceptual work cloaks
itself in other disciplines (philosophy being the
most notorious example), provoking an oscillation
between skilled and de-skilled, authority and pre-
tense, style and strategy, art and not-art. '
